Magic Moments > 1998 > Darren's Departure / Holly's Death Episode 3053

Written by Drew Tingwell, Directed by Tony Osicka

Harold is annoyed that Paul and Hannah have brought a guinea pig into the house. Libby is upset that Darren left without saying goodbye. Susan suggests that she go away for a few days. While on her travels, Libby bumps into Darren...

At number 32, Lance and Amy are kissing on the sofa, when Ben comes in, to introduce them to Drew, the new mechanic. Amy seems particularly pleased to meet him. Lance starts talking to Drew about what he’s working on, and he mentions the old ute. Lance explains that it belongs to him and Anne, but Ben won’t let them near it. Ben explains that he’s had other things to worry about, and Drew offers to give Lance a hand on it. Lance offers to go in tomorrow, and Amy looks pleased.

. . .

Darren and Libby are shocked to have bumped into each other. He says his ute will be ready to pick up in the morning. He says that at first, he wondered if she’d followed him out there and she says she could have handled herself with those blokes. They take their drinks outside and she says she was hurt that she didn’t get to wave him off and he apologises, saying that he thought their dinner was the perfect ending to things. He says they should eat together tonight, but she isn’t sure. He manages to talk her round though.

At number 26, Paul and Hannah haven’t found Axel the guinea pig, who’s gone missing. Paul is convinced he’s dead, but Phil says that animals can survive a long time on their own. There’s a knock at the door and Harold is standing there with some flowers that Holly dug up. Hannah apologises for leaving the gate open and Harold says that the dog is more trouble than it’s worth, before storming off.

. . .

The next morning, Harold finds Holly in his garden again and shoos her away. He then finds Paul on the steps, who says he’s found Axel. Harold realises that Axel is dead, and Paul tells Harold not to pretend that he cares. Paul says he never wanted him to have a pet in the first place.

Phil tells Hannah that there are certain responsibilities with owning a dog. He continues to rant at her, but Hannah hears strange noises from the laundry and when she goes out there, she sees Holly collapsed on the floor. She gets Phil and they both try to help the dog.

. . .

. . .

Darren tells Libby that his ute had better be ready today, as he wants to start making tracks. He says that if he doesn’t go now, he never will. He asks the mechanic if his ute’s ready and the guy gives him a bill. Darren says that the bill is three times as much as he expected and Libby agrees. The mechanic says there was more wrong with it than he thought and Darren says he wants a breakdown of the expenses or he won’t pay. The man then takes the keys and says “no money, no ute”.

Phil and Hannah are carrying Holly out to the car and they put her in the boot. Paul comes along and offers to go with them. Phil puts Holly down, but realises she’s dead and tells Hannah. Hannah breaks down in tears and runs inside. Phil says he’ll have to take the dog to the vet anyway, and Paul offers to stay and sit with Hannah.

. . .

Amy arrives at number 32 to see Lance, and explains that she wants to come to the garage to get photos of the human body for her art assignment. Amy says it’s a great environment to see a real man and Lance is flattered until she says she’s talking about Drew. They leave for the garage.

Darren says he can pay the bill, but he doesn’t want to be ripped off. Libby says how wrong it is and Darren says he hasn’t got much choice, but then Libby says she has an idea.

. . .

Phil gets home and Hannah asks him what happened. Phil says it looks like poisoning and Hannah says how cruel it is. Phil says there’s nothing to suggest it was deliberate, and then Paul wonders if Axel died from poisoning too. Phil tells them not to jump to conclusions, but they realise that both Axel and Holly were at number 24 just before they died. Phil says they have no proof and that he’ll talk to Harold. The phone rings and Phil goes to answer. Meanwhile, Paul and Hannah discuss how much Harold hated them having pets and how he said that they were more trouble than they’re worth.

At the garage, Amy is getting in the way with her camera and she says she has to get the angle right to take a good photo. She keeps focusing in on Drew’s bum and then she asks him how he copes with the heat in the garage. He says that he doesn’t really notice, but Lance says it is pretty hot and he takes his shirt off. Amy looks very unimpressed, but takes his photo anyway.

. . .

. . .

Libby goes into the garage and asks the mechanic if he stands by his bill, saying she has to be sure before she runs her article in the Erinsborough News. She says she’s doing an expose on dodgy mechanics and just needs him to sign the bill so that the paper won’t have to worry about any legal ramifications. He explains to her that he hasn’t signed it yet because it isn’t the final copy and he just has to check it for mistakes. He then offers to get drinks for Drew and Libby before going inside. Darren tells Libby how impressed he is with her.

At number 24, Phil has told Harold about Holly dying and how distraught Hannah is. He then explains how she was poisoned and Harold says how awful it is. Phil goes on to explain that the autopsy results have shown that Holly ingested metaldohyde, which is a poison most commonly found in snail bait. Harold is shocked and realises he’s been using those pellets in his garden.

. . .

Amy gets Lance and Drew to pose for her. She makes Lance post facing the other way so that she can get more photos of Drew. Lance notices what she’s doing and she apologises, saying that Drew’s darker skin makes for better photos.

Darren tells Libby that he’s surprised she didn’t try to get her room at the pub for half price, but she says she only uses her powers for good. She tells Darren that she wishes he could meet Grandpa Tom. She says she should go as Tom will be wondering where she is. They both look at each other for a while and then share a brief kiss. He says he’ll see her and walks off, leaving Libby looking slightly shaken. She sees him in her rear view mirror, and they look at each other as he drives away.

. . .

. . .

At number 32, Ben and Lance are playing table football and Lance says it was embarrassing that Amy only took photos of Drew. Lance explains that he’s too pale and Ben says that he thinks Drew’s tan is fake. Lance suddenly has a brainwave and says he’s going to use Anne’s fake tan and Amy will be amazed by the difference.

Harold calls in at number 26 and Hannah answers the door. Harold offers his condolences and says he feels dreadful, Hannah asks why. Harold says he’s sorry and has picked up all the pellets, before realising that Hannah doesn’t know. He explains to her and Hannah accuses Harold of poisoning Holly on purpose and that he’s negligent and cruel. She runs off, leaving Harold very hurt.

. . .

. . .

At number 32 the next morning, Lance sits down next to Ben and he’s bright orange. Ben tries not to laugh, but Lance wants to know what’s wrong. Ben points out that he’s orange and Lance starts to panic. He runs off to look at himself in the mirror and wonders how he’s going to explain this to Amy, who’s coming over soon to take some more photos. Ben tells him to relax and have some breakfast – before throwing him an orange…
