Following Dr Karl Kennedy’s brief dalliance with his surgery receptionist Sarah Beaumont, he went through a succession of replacements, including, for most of 2001, Penny Whatley. Penny worked through the arrival of Karl’s nephew, Darcy Tyler, who became a partner in, and tried to take over, the surgery, before Darcy’s dodgy ways led to the surgery undergoing a massive audit. Late in 2001, Penny went overseas for an extended holiday, and was replaced with Serena Lucas, who, it emerged, was using the job to steal prescription pads and deal drugs.
