Margaret Williams
Children: Matthew (adoptive)

When 20-year-old Hilary Robinson fell pregnant in the early 1970s, Margaret Williams proved to be a very important family friend. As Hilary was unmarried, Hilary’s strict parents decided it would be better that the child be kept secret and then adopted. The Robinsons turned to the Williams family and asked that they keep baby Matthew as their own. Hilary found it hard watching Matt growing up in Adelaide, so often took trips away to visit her cousin Jim in Erinsborough.

Matthew’s parentage remained a secret until 1989, when he discovered the truth. Margaret was forced to make an emergency request to Hilary (who had moved to Erinsborough) to return to Adelaide, and talk to her son. Although Matt eventually moved to Ramsay Street and was keen to get to know his biological mother, he still chose to spend Christmas 1989 with Margaret.
