Born in 1951 in Sydney, Australia, Tina Bursill initially wanted to be an anthropologist, before studying drama at the National Institute of Dramatic Art. After graduating in 1971, Tina played Meg Penrose in The People Next Door, and made appearances in series including Matlock Police and Chopper Squad. In 1979, she joined the series Skyways as administrator Louise Carter, and, a couple of years after that show came to an end, Tina appeared in Prisoner as ice queen Sonia Stevens.

During the 1980s, Tina had roles, both short and longer-term, in various Australian soaps, sitcoms and dramas series, including A Country Practice, Hey Dad!, The Flying Doctors, Home & Away and Heartbreak High. She went on to make appearances in Always Greener, Blue Water High, All Saints and Offspring, to name a few. In 2012, Tina played Moody family matriarch Maree in A Moody Christmas, reprising the role in the 2014 follow-up The Moodys.

In November 2013, it was announced that Tina had been cast in Neighbours as Kathy Carpenter, ex-wife to Lou and mother to Lauren, a character mentioned over the years but never seen on screen. Tina then made her debut as Kathy on Australian screens in March 2014 for an initial two-week sting, returning later in the year for another six weeks.
