At 15, he moved to Melbourne with his family in order to complete his education and further his music career. In Australia, he began to learn the guitar and began writing his first material.

Dean's breakthrough came when he auditioned for the fourth season of Australian Idol in 2006, where he performed a self-composed song, called Nice To Meet You. He was a hit with the judges and viewers like and went through to the live stages, ultimately finishing the show in third place.

On the back of his success, he later signed a contract with Sony BMG. In November it was confirmed that he would join the show in the role of Ty Harper, a part written specifically for him.
