During the custody hearing for Lolly Carpenter, John Allen’s barrister, Angela Patrick, made an excellent case for her client, Lolly’s biological father. She succeeded in painting Lou, who had raised her for seven years believing she was his own, as a part-time father who palmed his daughter off on the neighbours and rarely saw his own, grown-up children, and also brought up a painkiller addiction that Lou had suffered from earlier that year. Despite a last-minute plea from Lou, pointing out how much he loved Lolly and how well she had turned out thanks to him, judge Bill Bains granted custody to John and his wife, Sandy.
