A staid and conservative young woman from Queensland, who seemed an ideal match for Harold Bishop after he lost his childhood sweetheart, Madge, to Fred Mitchell. Mavis may have seemed to some to be Harold’s second choice, but the couple were very much in love. They married and took the natural step of starting a family. David, their first child, and Kerry, their second, were both born in the 1960s and raised in Brisbane, but they turned out to be very different people.

Mavis was a woman of simple pleasures; bird watching was her main hobby and it was a passion she shared with Harold. Perhaps a surprising indulgence; Mavis also enjoyed having champagne picnics.

Tragically, Mavis died while her children were still in their teens, leaving Harold to bring them up alone. Throughout his life, David marked the anniversary of his mother’s passing by going out to the countryside, watching the birds and having a champagne picnic, knowing that that is what his mother would like to do.
