Aubrey Laing 2022
Occupation: Student at Erinsborough High

When Zara Selwyn arrived in Erinsborough, her mum, Amy Greenwood, enrolled her at Erinsborough High, where a rebellious Zara got off on the wrong foot by deliberately setting off a smoke alarm. Her antics won her the attention of some of the other students, including Sadie Rodwell and Aubrey Laing, who'd wanted nothing to do with her on her first day. It quickly became clear, however, that rather than wanting to be Zara's friend, Sadie and Aubrey were actually plotting to get rid of the popular new girl. After finding out from Zara that one of the teachers, Jane Harris, had been caught spying on her daughter, using a spy camera inside a teddy bear, they managed to get hold of it during a lunch visit to Ramsay Street, then left it on Jane's chair. With Zara the prime suspect for having put it there, she found herself facing further punishment, but Sadie and Aubrey covered their tracks, and kept Zara on side, by claiming that she'd been with them the whole time and couldn't have had anything to do with the prank. But when Sadie, Aubrey, Zara and most of the other students then started using their phones to film Jane during class, and Zara asked if Jane would prefer it if they filmed her using a teddy cam, she found herself in trouble.

When school principal Susan Kennedy, along with Amy, confronted Zara over her behaviour, she grew increasingly upset as they accused her of planting the teddy cam at Jane's desk. When a bin at the school was set on fire the next day, it looked like Zara was responsible, after setting off the smoke alarm on her first day, combined with her history of starting a fire in a hotel back in Cairns. Aubrey and Sadie were happy to keep the rumours about Zara going, leaving Zara suspicious that they knew more about it than they were letting on and accusing them of starting the bin fire. With this stunt still failing to get Zara expelled from the school, Sadie and Aubrey upped the ante and set fire to Jane's mailbox outside her house on Ramsay Street - the house that Zara lived next-door to. This time, Zara was suspended, along with a threat from Amy to send her back to Cairns if there was one more incident.

With Zara trying to impress Sadie and Aubrey by claiming that there was more than friendship between her and neighbour Hendrix Greyson. Sadie and Aubrey were sceptical, so Zara stole a necklace that Hendrix had ordered for his girlfriend, Mackenzie, and had the engraving changed to show a 'Z' on one side and 'Love you H' on the other. With Zara firmly believing that Hendrix should be with her and not Mackenzie, she kissed him, but was quickly rejected, and matters only got worse for Zara when Sadie and Aubrey decided to let Mackenzie know what was going on. They sent Mackenzie a link to the social media group that the girls had been using to perv on Hendrix and forcing Zara to come clean about the kiss and stealing the necklace, leaving her in even more trouble. When she confronted Sadie and Aubrey, convinced that, along with telling Mackenzie, they'd been behind the fires and the teddy cam incident, they were delighted to learn that Amy was planning to send Zara back to Cairns. As an upset Zara ran off, Sadie was pleased that they'd managed to achieve what they wanted and wouldn't have to go through with the final part of their plan - setting fire to the school to frame Zara - but Aubrey had already decided that they were still going to do it.

With Mackenzie confused over Zara's inconsistent behaviour and also wondering if she was being set up, she found her at the school, where they both became trapped as a fire broke out, started by Aubrey. When Zara managed to escape through an air vent, and Mackenzie was eventually rescued to, after Hendrix ended up going in to help her, she was more convinced than ever that Sadie and Aubrey had been trying to frame her, angrily confronting them outside the school. Though Aubrey remained unrepentant, Sadie was starting to feel guilty over everything, worried that they'd finally gone too far. When Zara was then arrested on suspicion of arson, Sadie was getting closer to confessing, but Aubrey warned her that, if she did, she'd make out that Sadie was responsible for everything and had coerced her into it. With Hendrix growing increasingly suspicious of Sadie's behaviour, but Aubrey constantly around to cover for her, he finally got Sadie alone and she broke down, admitting that the whole thing had been engineered to get rid of Zara, but it had gone too far and people had been hurt. She went to the police and told them everything, and she and Aubrey were both charged with arson and found themselves expelled from Erinsborough High.

Some weeks later, Aubrey had been taken out of her new school due to the bullying, and her grandmother, Shannon, had offered to help with homeschooling her. With Zara aware that she'd made mistakes of her own and not wanting to see Aubrey's life completely ruined, she tried to get the high school to take Aubrey back, but with no luck. Jane did agree to help Shannon with the homeschooling, however, but worried that she wasn't taking her granddaughter's studies seriously, as she missed an important deadline. Shannon insisted that Jane hadn't given her any deadline, and when deaf teacher Curtis Perkins got involved in the matter, he noticed that Shannon was struggling with her hearing but was too embarrassed to admit it. Curtis eventually managed to persuade Shannon to get her hearing tested, where she was informed that she would need hearing aids, and she was grateful for his help and hopeful that it would now mean that she could help Aubrey better and improve her relationship with her granddaughter in the process.
