After Imogen Willis and Amber Turner were invited to a barbecue at the park, Imogen decided that it was about time that Amber started to move on from her brief relationship with Josh, Imogen's twin brother. Imogen introduced Amber to Clay, and the pair got on well. Having seen Josh chatting to one of his swimming friends Hayley, Amber decided to prove that she was over him, and kissed Clay - which was witnessed by an upset Josh. When Amber and Clay went on a date the following week, things started off strangely, when Josh saw them at Harold's Store and stared at them, leaving Clay feeling uncomfortable. Later, in Clay's car, Amber felt awkward as he started coming on to her and put his hand on her leg. He refused to stop when she made it clear that she was unhappy, and ended up getting out of the car. Clay drove off, just as Amber realised that she'd left her phone in his car.

Amber ended up bumping into her ex-boyfriend, Robbo Slade, as she made her way home in the dark. He'd fled town some weeks earlier, after it was discovered that he'd been involved in an attempted robbery at Lassiter's hotel, but had come back, thinking he was in the clear. Desperate to get Amber back, Robbo intercepted Clay the next day, when he came to meet Amber and return her phone. Robbo told Clay that he'd give the phone back, and warned him to stay away from her. Later that day, Clay went to see Amber, to apologise for his behaviour, and asked her to get Robbo to back off too.
