Character Profiles > John Doe Andrew Morley

John Doe 2016-
Occupation: Assistant at The Handywoman

When the boiler blew up at Lassiter's Hotel, Paige Smith found herself being saved from the blast by a mysterious stranger, who she'd seen around the hotel complex earlier that day. The man fell into a coma and, despite the best efforts of Paige and the police, they couldn't find out who he was. When he woke up, he was suffering from amnesia, but Paige was determined to help him, happy to have found a distraction from her grief, with her half-brother Josh and grandfather Doug both having died in the explosion.

As he was released from hospital, he was offered a place at a halfway house, but Paige tried to find somewhere else for him to stay, and even managed to get him some work, at Amy Williams' building yard. As she was beginning to develop feelings for the mysterious 'John Doe', Paige was unsettled by his easy friendship with Amy, and further upset when he found a place to stay, at the Canning house, where Amy also lived with her son, Jimmy. Paige, however, continued in her quest to help John, picking up clues about his past life, as they found that he was a natural with an electric drill, and John then met with Lassiter's receptionist Wendy Leung, who'd spoken to him on the morning of the explosion. With no strong leads, they started to put up posters around Erinsborough, asking if anyone knew John, and finally met someone who'd spent time with him, and to whom John had mentioned his love of the Geelong Cats, and of the city itself. With Paige and John preparing to pay a visit to Geelong, mechanic Tyler, who worked at the garage next to Amy's yard, was disturbed when he walked up behind John, who had headphones on and suddenly lashed out. Tyler managed to avoid being injured, and he later warned Paige that perhaps she shouldn't go away with John, as they still knew nothing about him.

Not one to be easily put off, Paige joined John on his trip to Geelong, but although he felt a slight sense of familiarity when he saw the Giant Sky Wheel on the waterfront, they could find no further clues to his identity. However, as they spent the night in a local hostel, and almost shared a kiss, Paige spotted a photograph on the wall, of John with another young man. Paige sent the photo to her computer whizz brother Bailey, who put it on the dark web and learnt that the other guy was called Dustin Oliver. He provided an email address and mentioned that Dustin was in Melbourne, so John and Paige headed back to Erinsborough, arranging a meeting for the following day. John was delighted, certain that he was about to find out who he was, but the meeting proved to be brief - as Dustin approached, he referred to John as 'J' and seemed pleased to see him, but when he spotted police constable Mark Brennan nearby, he promptly did a runner. Now convinced that he'd been associating with criminals in his previous life, John decided that he was going to do everyone a favour a leave town. But Paige tracked him down to the bus stop and told him that she wanted him to stay, pointing out that regardless of what he was like before, he now had a chance to make a fresh start, and that wasn't something that many people got the opportunity to do.

Relations then seemed to improve between John and Paige, but when he ate some pineapple and had an allergic reaction, it once again made him realise how little he actually knew about himself. Karl Kennedy agreed to a hypnotherapy session, to see if they could find out anything new about him, but it ended badly as John became terrified and started to see flames. When Paige later tried to kiss him, he turned her down, telling her that he couldn't be with her, before running off. Paige asked Mark to speak to John and try to find out what the problem was - and John admitted that although he was attracted to Paige, he couldn't take things further until he knew what sort of person he was. As he explained this to Paige, she offered to stick with him and accompanied him to his next hypnotherapy session. He again became very frightened, later telling Paige that he'd seen flames and a girl with long brown hair, and Karl gave him a referral to a psychiatrist who might be able to help make sense of his jumbled memories. Later, as he and Paige discussed the situation, they were unaware that they were being watched by a mysterious figure who was recording them.

Paige and John were then in for another shock when a woman named Mandy turned up, claiming that she was his girlfriend. She told him that his name was Jason Jones, and that they lived in Geelong together and didn't really have any friends as a couple. She also explained that she'd been travelling, and he hadn't wanted to go with her, so she'd been surprised to return to Australia and find him missing. As Mandy revealed more and more small details of their time together, John was convinced that she was genuine and that he'd finally found a link to his past, but Paige was more suspicious, particularly as Mandy claimed that she'd lost her phone whilst in Africa so didn't have any photos of them together. After spotting Mandy trying to jog John's memory by kissing him, Paige became determined to prove that she was a fake. With Mandy planning to take John to Geelong, Paige realised that she had to act quickly and she took them some pizzas - knowing that John was allergic to pineapple, Paige tripped Mandy up, as she claimed that Hawaiian was his favourite. When John then asked her about a scar on his shin, and she said that he got it during a skiing trip, he realised that she'd been lying all along, as there was no scar. Mandy then admitted that she was just very lonely, and after bumping into John at Lassiter's before the explosion, then reading his story, she decided to try her luck with him. Before she left, John asked her if he'd said anything to her when they first met, and she said that he'd just been passing through the area, but had seemed very distracted, like he was looking for someone or something.

John's next lead came when he spotted a woman walking across Lassiter's, and immediately recognised her, but couldn't catch up with her. He then saw her again as she was leaving Grease Monkeys, and getting into her work van, and he couldn't shake the feeling that he knew her, and the logo on the van. He again failed to catch her, but Paige managed to use CCTV footage to get the logo from the van, tracing it to Braun & Bell Technologies. John went to their nearby branch, where he spoke to an employee who insisted that he didn't recognise John, but added that the company was a franchise, so John could have worked in one of their other locations, and explained that, amongst other things, they were responsible for the installation and upkeep of boilers. As he started to have flashbacks to being in the Lassiter's boiler room, John admitted to Paige that he was starting to think that he might have been the person who caused the explosion...
