After being revealed as Callum's real mum, Sonya Mitchell had got things back on track with Callum, and her relationship with his adoptive father, Toadie, but was still nervous about doing normal 'parenty' things with him. When Cathy McPhee, the mother of Callum's friend Thomas, wanted to meet Sonya and Toadie before agreeing to a sleepover, things seemed to go well, and Sonya even decided to do some volunteer work with the high school, teaching the kids about gardening. When it came to her trial teaching session, Cathy and her son Thomas were in attendance, as impressed principal Michael Williams told her that she was a natural and, as long as her criminal check came back clear, she'd be fine to do it regularly. Cathy immediately spotted the awkward look on Sonya's face at the mention of her past and, after some digging around, found out about Sonya's history with addiction and conviction for assault. Later, at Harold's store, Cathy told Sonya that she had cancelled the sleepover, as she didn't want her son to be around Callum or Sonya from now on, due to her past.
