First seen in 1985 with teacher, Marcia Taylor running the classroom, the high school has been a constant over the years, though the name of the suburb was not mentioned until 1986, and so the name Erinsborough High was not given on screen until Neighbours was in its second year, in episode 319, written on posters advertising the school dance. The school was seen regularly in 1986, all shot on location in the playgrounds and principals' office of a real school, but once Scott, Mike, Jane and Charlene graduated, it was not shown again until episode 838, late in 1988, when Mike accepted a job as a relief teacher there. Again a real classroom interior was used for the few scenes shown, and this classroom was used again in 1989. A real school exterior and interior continued to be used occasionally in 1990, while in 1991, the first school-based set appeared in the form of principal Dorothy Burke's office.

In August 1992, a new permanent school set debuted to coincide with the formation of a new Neighbours teen gang (Debbie, Rick, Michael, Cody, Danni and Brett), featuring a corridor with numerous doors leading off it, a stairwell and a classroom, in which seemingly all lessons are taught, with the layout varying on the occasion that more than one regular character is working at the school. In addition this has also doubled as a computer room. The set has changed very little over the years with white walls and light blue/lilac doors remaining throughout its run, with two additional doors being added to the classroom in 2005 just a few steps apart. Other areas of the school have been seen over the years including the football oval, playground, school hall and changing rooms.

2008 saw the debut of a new high school set with much the same layout as its predecessor, with the addition of some extra doors, corridors and an office. The paint scheme followed the colours of the uniform with light blue/lilac walls in the classroom and office, maroon and grey walls in the corridors and maroon doors. The number of doors to the classroom reduced to just two with one opening onto each of the main corridors.

2010 saw a dramatic overhaul of the school set with additional corridors, a new office, plus a change to the layout of the classroom set with the addition of a computer and modern classroom equipment. The school logo was also redesigned. Additionally, the arrival of new Principal, Michael Williams, brought about changes to the running of the school, with his new open door policy for students to talk or suggest ideas, students being allowed to call staff by their first names, the introduction of vocational subjects and a new healthy lunch initiative catered by Lassiter's Hotel.

The Erinsborough High uniform has changed numerous times over the years, with the one consistent item being a maroon sweater, originally featuring the school logo, although this was dropped in 1989. The uniform for boys has changed very little over the years, consisting of a white/grey shirt and grey shorts or trousers, with the shirt changing to blue in 2005. The girls’ uniform, however has changed numerous times with the dress changing from brown checked to pink checked in 1989, adapting again in the early 90’s with the addition of violet & purple to the dress. 2005 saw the dress change yet again, this time to blue. 2010 saw the introduction of maroon blazers for both genders, bearing the school emblem or American-style baseball jackets for members of sports teams. The girls uniform was changed to a blue blouse with a blue checked skirt in the same design as the previous dress.

The school has gone through numerous mergers over the years, merging with West Waratah Tech in 1994 and West Waratah High in 2005, which saw the uniform change. A merger with Elliot Park High was proposed in 1997, however following a campaign led by Toadfish Rebecchi this was rejected.

No school is complete without a PTA and Erinsborough High is no different. The current head of the PTA is the as yet unseen, Robin Sanderson, whilst the role was previously held by Ruth Wilkinson, along with Philip Martin as treasurer and Madge Bishop.

A number of Ramsay Street residents have also run for the positions of school captain & vice-captain, including Cody Willis & Rick Alessi, Stonefish Rebecchi & Brett Stark who lost out to Kieran Wallace and Anne Wilkinson who shared the role with Amy Greenwood.
